Biography[]

Mythic Quest[]

Rachel was hired at Mythic Quest Studios six months before the launch of Raven's Banquet, working as a video game tester alongside Dana Bryant. She spends her days playing the game and logging bugs, but feels like she and Dana have a lot more to offer and that their opinions should be consulted when making the game. Rachel is attracted to Dana, and tells her that she has really great ideas that need to be heard. Rachel asks the head of Human Resources, Carol, if her approach to telling Dana about her feelings would work, leading Carol to call a meeting about workplace abuse and harassment.[2]

Rachel and Dana were required to log all the bugs from Brad Bakshi's janky new casino that he had made by a studio in Bucharest, requiring them to work throughout the night. Rachel offered to cover for Dana when she had plans, but Dana ended up postponing them. The pair worked throughout the night logging bugs and then having fun around the office, including eating the last of Poppy's ice-cream sandwiches. After logging over one hundred bugs, Rachel went home, leaving Dana in the office.[1]

After a Nazi problem was discovered within the Mystic Quest player base, Dana was asked to join an Ethics Committee organized by David Brittlesbee. Rachel wanted to join as well but David initially told her that her perspective was filled until Rachel told him that she was gay. David agreed to her participation, and the group went on to determine which groups and types of people should be banned from the game. Eventually, the group settled on an answer: Nazis.[3]

With several members of the studio, including Dana, at StreamerCon, Rachel and C.W. Longbottom both found themselves adrift from their usual routines. Getting to talking after C.W. wandered into the testing booth, Rachel admitted that she always skipped cutscenes in games because they didn't matter, while C.W. defended them as creating the emotional connection to the game but admitted that he never played Mythic Quest. Rachel introduced C.W. to the game, followed by C.W. showing Rachel emotional cutscenes from several games including Red Dead Redemption 2.[4]

Dana was transferred out of the tester pool when she became Mythic Quest Studios' in-house streamer for the game. Rachel found herself working with Lou, a slovenly tester brought up from the third floor testing pool. Initially believing that Rachel's discomfort with him is due to sexual tension, Lou told her that he did not want to sleep with her. When Rachel told him she was gay, Lou then remarked that he could probably turn her, leading to more tension between them. Rachel when to Carol about the situation, but explained it badly and did not understand what Carol's role in human resources actually covered.[5]

Rachel found that Dana was struggling with being a streamer, not using her own natural charm and dorkiness. Rachel convinced her to lean into her own personality and use her glasses. Dana follows the advice, and coupled with the interest in Mythic Quest surrounding the duel between Ian and the Masked Man hacker, her career takes off.[6] Rachel noticed that Dana seemed off in one of her later streams, as she was being worked hard by Brad Bakshi. Resolving to help out, Rachel took Dana for a day at the arcade playing retro games. As they spent the day together, they seemed close to sharing a kiss until they were interrupted by Jo who had been sent to find them.[7]

Dana was outed as Mythic Quest Studios employee and let go since her role as a tester was no longer available. Rachel, learning that she was partly responsible for Dana being discovered since internet "sleuths" had found a reflection of C.W.'s Nebula Award in the reflection of her glasses, she begged Brad for help. Brad, as part of his overall ambition to have people owe him, arranged for Lou to be promoted and Dana to get her job back. But it was clear it was no favour; Brad now "owned" Rachel.[8]

Relationship with Dana[]

After everyone comes back from quarantine, Rachel is eager to pursue Dana more strongly. But her hesitancy and tendency towards over-analysis get in the way. She uses Carol inappropriately as a relationship counselor rather than an HR professional.

Dana and Rachel finally kiss in a parking garage, once Dana resolves to actually express how she feels. Following Carol's advice, she stops Rachel from continuing on an analytical path that would only incrementally advance their relationship. Instead, she simply kisses Rachel with abandon, ending the Rachel's paralyzing fears. Still, Rachel has to come to the realization that the kiss was not a dream. One of the things that helps her make the transition to the new reality is the fact that their kiss is blocking Carol's departure from work. She abruptly tells them to get out of the way so she can get home.
