David Brittlesbee is one of the main characters of the Apple TV+ streaming series Mythic Quest. He works as the Executive Producer for Mythic Quest Studios, but is constantly overruled and ignored by other members of the team. David is portrayed by David Hornsby, first appearing in the episode "Pilot".
David is the soft-spoken, hapless, executive producer of Mythic Quest, who is lacks the confidence and decision-making ability to exercise his authority over his employees. This is seen often, especially when Jo, David's personal assistant, tries to become Ian's assistant instead of David's. He recently went through a messy divorce, and Brad mentions that his ex-wife is Asian.
Biography[]
Background[]
As a child, David grew up with a mother who constantly told him that he was not creative or talented. His father was often drunk and never stood up to his wife. The only thing they both agreed on was that if David was to attend the symphony, it would make him too soft. Eventually, his parents divorced.[2] David was previously married, but by the time of the Raven's Banquet launch they had divorced.[3]
Raven's Banquet launch[]
Despite being the Executive Producer of Mythic Quest Studios, David shared an office with the Head of Monetization, Brad Bakshi.[3] As Mythic Quest was due to launch it's first major expansion, Raven's Banquet, David hired a new personal assistant, Jo, to work for him. With only days before code lock, Ian and Poppy came to a disagreement about one of the items in the game, a new shovel. Ian wanted time to "noodle" on it, and David made him promise to not ask to delay the launch of the expansion.[2]
Over the course of the next few days, David's inability to rein in Ian led to him seeking out Carol, the head of Human Resources, for a counselling session. Despite that not being her role, Carol attempted to help David by asking about his management style, but when he started to descend into talking about his parents and how the situation between Ian and Poppy reminded him of their divorce, Carol shut him down.[2]
Eventually, Ian asked for David to delay the expansion so he could continue to noodle on the shovel. David sided with Poppy and told Ian the expansion was launching on schedule, leading to Ian storming off. Over the weekend, Ian and Poppy worked together to give the shovel a dual purpose as a weapon, and Raven's Banquet was a hit when it launched.[2]
After Brad disappeared and removed all the furniture from their shared office after Poppy told him that he wasn't needed, David worried what Brad was going to do. Poppy told him that Brad was throwing a tantrum and not to worry about since Brad loves money and will be back the next day. When David arrived at the studio the following day, Poppy told him that Brad had shut down the in-game store and made all the items free. David and Poppy tried to go to Brad house, but he had arranged for David's car to be clamped and deactivated Poppy's Lyft account. Eventually Brad turned all of the systems back on once Ian agreed to unmask the Masked Man at a new in-game casino that Brad proposed.[3]
When Kotaku uncovered a Nazi problem within Mythic Quest's player base, David was determined to kick them out of the game. However, he was manipulated by Brad into creating an Ethics Committee after Brad pointed out that a straight white man should not be making decisions about who to ban. The committee, consisting of himself, Brad, Jo, Rachel, Dana, and later, C.W., eventually came to the decision that the Nazis should be banned, but by that time Ian and Poppy had dealt with the situation by isolating them all in their own server.[1]
With most of the senior leadership team at StreamerCon, David is left nominally in charge of the studio. He is immediately put out of his element when a scheduled tour group from Girls Can Code arrives at the offices and David has to find women who work at the company to speak to them. His efforts are not helped as most senior woman at Mythic Quest, Poppy, is off at StreamerCon, Michelle is the only programmer available and she is working on her resume and tells the young girls that everyone in the group is their competition, and Sue actively discourages them from ever seeking a role in community management. Even Jo is uncharacteristically subservient after David had previously told her that her job is to do whatever he tells her to do.[4]
Post-pandemic[]
By the time the gang all come back to work in the office, David believes he's the boss. But no one else does. Even Sue, somewhat remote from the business' power structure, expresses surprise that he claims to be her boss. She repeatedly tells him that the reason people don't believe it is because of his kind eyes.
After normal office life resumes, Jo is quick to move on. She leaves David's office for Brad's, seemingly glad of the switch. The three seemingly treat it as a kind of "romantic triangle", with David eventually devolving into a kind of rejected lover around them.
